What is the a policy on piercing minors?

Regardless of any local legislation being more lenient, the following is an appropriate minimum standards policy on piercing minors:

For any piercing of a minor, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a consent form. Proof positive, state issued photo identification is required from the legal guardian, and a bona fide form of identification from the minor. In the event the parent has a different last name and/or address from the child, court documentation is needed to prove the relationship, i.e., birth certificate or other court official documentation showing custody has been granted to the guardian present.

Under no circumstances is it acceptable or appropriate for a piercer to perform piercing on the nipples or genitals of an individual under 18 years of age.

We pierce minors ages 7 and up, when accompanied by their legal guardian or parent and have provided all forms identification required. The minor must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian for the duration of the procedure. For all minor piercings, regardless of age we do begin the appointment with a consultation. In this consultation the minor will need to demonstrate the ability to follow instructions, be calm and collected, and show that they are emotional ready for the procedure and healing process.

  • A valid state issued photo identification is required from the parent or legal guardian, and a bona fide form of photo identification is required from the minor. In the event that last names do not match, or address do not match, additional documentation will be required.

    Photo Id Examples for Adults:
A current passport may be provided in place of a state issued ID for all adults.

ID examples for minors include: School issued ID card, State Issued ID Card, Permit, Driving License or Passport.

In the event the parent has a different last name and/or address from the child: official and original documentation is needed to prove the relationship, i.e., birth certificate or other court official documentation showing custody has been granted to the guardian present.

All supporting documentation does need to be presented in physical form and be an official certified copy. Digital Images, Photocopies or home printed documentation is not considered valid.

In the event that guardianship has been court appointed to another adult, or in the event of emancipation, court documentation will need to be provided to prove the change.

If your have questions about the documentation you have, please give us a call at (503) 624-1719 or send us an email at skincity@hotmail.com

Failure to provide appropriate ID will lead to your appointment being cancelled. A service fee of $40 may be applied to each missed service resulting from this. Appointments can be rescheduled, and no fee will apply to any appointment cancelled with 24 hour notice.

  • Our Age Minimums are influenced by anatomical and emotional development during childhood and adolescents. Certain factors such as physical growth, historic ability to heal previous piercings, lifestyle factors and ability to handle the piercing process with maturity all impact the ability for certain piercings to be preformed and healed safely and successfully.

As a Guideline, the following age ranges demonstrate the youngest our team feels comfortable. Although typically we can pierce most minors at their requested appointment time, an appointment is not a guarantee that the desired service will be completed. For the best experience we recommend preparing your child that this is a consultation that may require an additional appointment. When planning this as part of a momentous occasion such as a birthday or gift, we recommend calling ahead of time to discuss what type of procedure they are hoping to schedule so we can navigate any potential challenges beforehand.

    Beginning Piercings: Ages 7 +

At Skin City we consider Earlobe Piercings to be a beginning piercing. Other beginning procedures include: jewelry changes, piercing checkups and piercing removals. We offer earlobe (single) and earlobe (pair) appointments.

Beginning piercings are piercings that heal quickly and are the least intimidating or painful. At this time, Jeric (Jay) pierces Ages 7 to 9. Jessica (Jess) and Megan work with ages 10 and up.

    Intermediate Piercings: Ages 13 +

At Skin City we consider Nostrils, helix, conch, and second – third earlobes to be intermediate piercings.

Typically minors have already received a piercing such as their earlobes and healed this successfully. The healing time on these piercings can take up to one year, and needs to be cleaned twice a day. It cannot be replaced with a clear retainer for things like sports or performances until it is fully healed. Earlobes typically are considered healed in 4 to 6 months.

Septum piercings are performed shop wide as young as 15. If you feel your child is ready, and at least 14 years old, Megan and Jeric recommend scheduling an appointment online and preparing your child for a conversation about readiness.

    Advanced Piercings: Ages 16+

At Skin City we consider Navel, Lip and Eyebrow, Daith and Rook piercings to be Advanced.

These piercings are very anatomy and lifestyle specific. When considering or preparing your minor for these procedures we recommend reminding your child that every body is unique, and that piercings do not heal successfully everywhere on everyone. These piercings are in areas that experience more movement, more prone to rejection and have a higher complication risk. When they come in for one of these piercings your piercer will conduct an anatomy check and walk you and your child through what we are looking for. If the anatomy is determined to not heal successfully, depending on the remaining time in the appointment, you will be given the opportunity to pierce something else instead. We recommend having a second or even third piercing in mind, and preparing your child for this possibility. Should they have the anatomy that is determined to lead to a successful healing process, lifestyle and aftercare will be discussed.

    Adult Only Piercings:

Under no circumstances is it acceptable or appropriate for a piercer to perform piercing on the nipples or genitals of an individual under 18 years of age. In addition to these procedures, Industrial piercings, Tongue Piercings, bridge piercings, surface piercings and anchors/dermal piercings are all considered Adult only piercings at Skin City.

    Children’s Earlobes Ages 7 – 10

    Who is our Piercer?

Jeric (Jay), a father himself loves working with kiddos ages 7 and up who are ready to get their first piercings. Please be careful to select the correct appointment when booking for minors under 10. This appointment will be called: Earlobes (pair) Ages 7 to 9 or Earlobes (single) Ages 7 to 9.

  • In piercing children’s lobes we require them to be at least 7 years old and that they are able to relay that would like to be pierced.

Integrity and informed consent are paramount to the success of a piercing. We need them to be able to have a comfortable conversation with their piercer and that they’re able to listen to and understand the piercing and aftercare process.

We also require the child can repeat aftercare instructions and follow piercer instructions throughout the service.

All piercing procedures are based on piercer discretion so bear in mind that there is a chance we may not feel comfortable performing said piercings depending on environment, client active lifestyle etc.

All piercings can have adverse reactions on your health and wellbeing. The precautions we take can help reduce some of this risk, but risk does still exist. Common risks include, but are not limited to: Infection, rejection, scarring, keloids, gum recession, teeth damage, and nerve damage. Resolving these complications can require medical or dental intervention. It is important to understanding the risks when consenting to modifying your body.

Failure to read the minor policy will result in a $40 charge and a cancelled appointment.
